Scarless Surgery With the da Vinci SP: How the Single-Port Robot Works

The da Vinci SP (which stands for Single Port) is a robotic surgical system made by Intuitive. Its defining feature is right there in the name: rather than needing several separate incisions, it works through just one.

Through a single port around 2.5 centimetres wide, the system passes a fully articulating 3D high-definition camera along with three small wristed instruments. Once inside the body, these fan out and work around the target area, giving the surgeon a clear view and a full range of movement, even in tight or hard-to-reach spaces. A/Prof Talbot controls all of it from a console beside you, so the surgeon is performing the operation throughout, with the robot providing steadier and finer control.t before proceeding to surgery.

How is it different from other robot-assisted surgeries?

Most robotic surgery, including the widely used da Vinci system, is excellent but still relies on several small incisions, one for the camera and others for each instrument. The SP system brings the camera and all the instruments through a single entry point instead.

For the patient, that means fewer wounds to heal, and in the right cases, less discomfort and a tidier result. 

Why is it called scarless surgery?

Because everything happens through one small incision, and that incision is usually placed inside the belly button, where the skin naturally folds. Once healed, it’s hidden from view, which is why the approach is often described as scarless. It isn’t that there’s no incision at all. It’s that the single, small one is tucked away where you won’t see it.

For many patients, avoiding a set of visible scars across the abdomen is a genuine benefit, both cosmetically and in terms of healing.

Which procedures can the SP robot be used for?

A/Prof Talbot offers single-port surgery for selected upper GI and general surgical procedures, including:

• Hernia repair, including certain abdominal wall and groin hernias
• Gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy)
• Reflux surgery to repair a hiatus hernia and restore the anti-reflux barrier

As with all robotic surgery, the single-port approach isn’t right for every patient or every operation. It’s chosen when it offers a clear benefit over standard keyhole or open surgery, based on your anatomy, your condition and what will give the safest, most durable result, tailored to the individual patient.
