Bariatric Patient Journey

Embarking on a weight-loss surgery journey is a life-changing decision.
At Upper GI Surgery, we support you through every stage — from initial exploration to long-term wellness — with a dedicated team and a comprehensive, structured approach.

We’re with you at every step — before, during, and long after surgery — so you feel confident, informed, and empowered to achieve lasting change.

“It’s time to get help.”

Your journey begins with understanding your options and gathering information. At this stage, you’ll research treatments, explore costs, get a referral from your GP, and book an appointment with our clinic.

  • Your role: Learn about procedures, compare providers, prepare questions, and bring someone for support.

  • Our role: Arrange your first appointment and provide educational resources.

“Which option is best for me?”

Through a series of consultations, you’ll meet with our physicians, surgeons, practice nurses, and dietitians. Together, we’ll review your medical history, discuss goals and expectations, and create a personalised plan.

  • Your role: Share your medical history, understand lifestyle changes, consider expectations, and make informed decisions.

  • Our role: Review results, answer questions, organise tests, explain procedures, and prepare you for surgery.

“I’m ready for change.”

Before surgery, you’ll begin a pre-operative diet, complete necessary forms, and attend any pre-admission requirements. This preparation ensures your body is ready for the procedure and reduces risks.

  • Your role: Follow the pre-op diet, pay any required costs, complete forms, and prepare for your hospital stay.

  • Our role: Ensure readiness, manage expectations, and guide you through the final steps before surgery.

“The day is finally here.”

On surgery day, you’ll be cared for by our experienced surgical team using the latest minimally invasive techniques. Our focus is on safety, precision, and achieving the best possible outcomes.

  • Your role: Arrive on time, complete final pre-op steps, and follow instructions.

  • Our role: Perform the procedure with care, ensure minimal complications, and provide comprehensive in-hospital support.

“I’m excited to start my new life.”

Post-surgery, we support you with recovery plans, diet guidance, and follow-up care. Our team monitors your condition, addresses concerns, and ensures your recovery stays on track.

  • Your role: Follow recovery and self-care instructions, attend follow-up appointments, and communicate openly with your care team.

  • Our role: Check your progress, address any issues, and provide ongoing education and support.

“I’m healthier, happier, and in control.”

Your journey doesn’t end after surgery — it evolves into long-term wellness. With regular check-ins, dietary support, and lifestyle coaching, we help you maintain results and build a sustainable, healthy future.

  • Your role: Commit to lifestyle changes, attend follow-ups, and participate in support groups.

  • Our role: Monitor your health, manage weight-loss expectations, provide ongoing support, and help you thrive.
