An incisional hernia is a bulge that occurs at the site of a previous operation. These hernias range from simple bulges of only a cm or two that can be easily managed with keyhole techniques to massive and debilitating defects that require complex plastic surgical techniques in order to get successful treatment. In general, it is better to consider electively repair most incisional hernias as emergency management is sometimes required to fix up strangulated bowel or other problems. Emergency surgery carries a 10 x risk of complications and failure of the repair.
