POEM (Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy)
Upper GI Surgery performs POEM (Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy) as a treatment option for Achalasia. This is the preferred therapy for patients with a disease that is very complex/complicated or for patients that have recurrent or persistent symptoms.
Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy procedure is basically an endoscopic way of performing a Heller Myotomy. POEM takes longer to perform than the laparoscopic version of the procedure, approximately 2 – 3 hours and recovery time in hospital is on average a couple of days. Although this procedure takes longer to perform, the risks associated with Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy are very similar to that of a Heller Myotomy.
