Patients with massive hernias, who have had complex surgical illnesses or lost a lot of weight can end up with abdominal defects that lead to functional disability as well as being cosmetically unappealing. Patients in this situation need to have their abdominal wall “re-modelled” or reconstructed using a combination of muscle transfer, mesh placement and excision of excess skin. This type of surgery takes hours to perform and weeks to recover from but it can resolve many functional problems that these defects create.
